Students can take as many courses at a time as they can handle and progress as quickly as they prefer. Our classes start every month, so students can start at the right time in their lives. WGU began building its personalized learning model by disrupting the traditional two-semester system. So many things work against students who are trying to earn a degree while balancing work, family, and personal commitments. These students are much less likely to graduate than students who can enroll in four-year programs. Students often choose to work while attending college in hopes of minimizing debt, but data shows this approach tends to be a dead end. Q: How does WGU personalize the learning journey?įlexible, personalized learning is necessary for students who want to earn a higher degree but are unable to participate in a traditional, full-time four-year program. We assume students will attempt many assignments multiple times. Any assignment will have one of two outcomes: pass or not pass. Our learning model is also not grade-based. It’s about demonstrating mastery of course content. It’s not about time spent in a classroom. “Competency-based learning” simply means, “ Prove it.” Q: Competency-based learning is a hallmark of the WGU mission. On this episode of Illuminate Higher Education, Patrick Partridge, President of WGU Academy, joins podcast host Kiran Kodithala to discuss the challenges faced by higher education in this modern age.Įxplore the highlights of the conversation in this brief Q&A, then listen to the full episode for more details. WGU has been at the forefront of making both online learning and competency-based education highly respected alternatives to traditional higher education. Western Governors University seeks to bridge this gap. As a result, there is a disconnect between traditional higher education outcomes, i.e., degrees, and what both individuals and employers need from higher education opportunities. I work in education and if we didn't have Active Directory and some other proprietary Windows software we leverage, it would be a nightmare trying to keep our machines locked down so students didn't fubar them up - especially public machines that are shared.Higher education has had a tough time keeping up with the social, economic, and technological changes of recent decades. Active Directory is incredibly user friendly & easy to administer and manage when it comes to managing a large fleet of machines. Linux servers are often insanely light if the administrator knows what they're doing. Even environments that are known to be "Linux shops" have a number of Windows machines, and "Windows shops" have a number of Linux machines. Hence the reason why most environments are hybrid Windows, Linux and often times even BSD. There are things Linux does better, and there are things Windows does better. You just sound silly and misinformed throwing that comment around. I find it incredibly fun to administer and I love diagnosing incidents in Linux and figuring out ways to prevent those incidents from becoming problems, but to say Linux is better at everything except for gaming is in my professional opinion, absurd. Better at everything except maybe gaming.
